Judge Berman serves as a mediator, arbitrator and discovery master/special adjudicator in commercial, probate, employment, real estate, general equity, personal injury matters, and high-net-worth matrimonial cases. He also undertakes law enforcement investigations and has served as a hearing officer in disciplinary matters across various public sectors.
An American Arbitration Association (AAA) trained arbitrator, Judge Berman sits on the AAA’s Employment and Commercial Panels. He is also a Certified Mediator for the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.
Following a 17-year career in private practice, Judge Berman served in the Superior Court of Middlesex County from 1989 to 1998, where he presided over matters ranging from prerogative writs to capital murder. He was appointed Prosecutor for Middlesex County in 1998, appearing before the New Jersey Supreme Court and trying numerous jury cases during his tenure. In 2002, he returned to the Middlesex County bench, serving as Presiding Judge of the Family Part from 2003 to 2008, and from 2008 through 2012 served as one of two Superior Court Judges in the Chancery Division, General Equity, presiding over complex commercial, business, probate, real estate and general equity matters. During his tenure on the bench, Judge Berman authored 17 published opinions across all four divisions – General Equity Part, Civil Division, Chancery/Family Part, and the Criminal Part.
Prior to his retirement on January 1, 2013, Judge Berman also served as Acting Assignment Judge and was specially designated to preside over New Jersey’s 2012 landmark cyberbullying case, State of New Jersey v. Dharun Ravi.
