William L. Greenbaum

1891-1983

William L. Greenbaum was a self-made success and entrepreneur who founded the firm that still proudly bears his family name when he established his solo practice in his hometown of Newark, New Jersey in 1914. After receiving his law degree from New Jersey Law School, a predecessor of Rutgers School of Law – Newark, “WL” began representing local business owners, trade associations, and building and loan associations, as well as friends, neighbors and individuals in the community. He was dedicated to his work and took great pride in his growing law practice. History and world affairs, however, had other plans for young WL, and after being inducted in the U.S. Army in 1918, he had no choice but to step away from the practice of law for a year to fulfil his military service duties.

After returning home and resuming his practice, WL helped organize a number of professional trade associations to which he served as legal counsel, eventually becoming a principal in a small FHA mortgage company. In time, he married and became the father of two sons, Robert and Arthur, who were raised with a solid appreciation for the value of hard work and an unwavering sense of fairness. Ultimately, both sons took an interest in following in their father’s professional footsteps, assuming responsibility for overseeing the mortgage company’s operations and pursuing their own credentials to practice law. The ability to meet and cultivate relationships with builders, brokers, bankers and other professionals involved in real estate development allowed the Greenbaum family to step firmly into the world of New Jersey real estate. In the coming years, WL and sons continued to grow the family business, adding all manner of real estate transactions to the firm’s general business law and litigation practice.

WL continued to serve as special counsel to the firm following his retirement in 1963. In June of 1974, he was honored by his colleagues in New Jersey’s commercial real estate and legal communities in recognition of his 60th anniversary in the practice of law. Among the organizations saluting his accomplishments were the New Jersey Association of Realtors, which granted him the title of Counsel Emeritus – NJ Realtors remains a Greenbaum client to this day.  WL was also recognized at the time as a distinguished alumnus by the Rutgers Law School Alumni Association – fast forward to Greenbaum’s current roster of attorneys, which is comprised of over two dozen Rutgers Law alumni.

WL passed away in March of 1983, two months short of his 93rd birthday, survived by his wife, his two sons, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
